Couch Care & Maintenance Tips
Simple, practical tips to keep your sofa looking its best and lasting for years to come.
Dealing with Pilling
Over time, fabric sofas can develop small balls of fibre on the surface called "pills." This is completely normal, especially in high-traffic areas like seat cushions and armrests. The good news? They're easy to remove.
Stain Removal
Act fast — the sooner you treat a stain, the better your results will be. Our go-to is Folex Instant Carpet Spot Remover, available at Home Depot. Despite the name, it works wonderfully on upholstered furniture. It's non-toxic, odour-free, and safe for most fabric types.
- Apply a small amount of Folex directly to the stain
- Blot gently with a clean cloth — do not rub, as rubbing spreads the stain
- Work from the outside of the stain inward to prevent spreading
- Repeat as needed until the stain lifts, then allow to air dry
Pet Hair Removal
If you share your couch with a furry family member, pet hair can quickly become a fact of life. Here are a few effective ways to keep it under control:
- Rubber gloves: Put on a pair of rubber dish gloves, dampen them slightly, and run your hands over the fabric — the texture grabs pet hair surprisingly well
- Lint roller or tape roller: Great for quick touch-ups between deeper cleans
- Vacuum with an upholstery attachment: The most thorough method — run weekly to remove hair, dander, and debris before it builds up
Fluffing & Rotating Cushions
Cushions naturally compress over time in the spots where you sit most often. A little regular maintenance goes a long way toward keeping your sofa looking even and feeling comfortable.
- Fluff and knead cushions regularly — give them a good squeeze and shake to redistribute the filling
- Rotate and flip cushions every few weeks so that wear is distributed evenly across all sides
- If your cushions have removable covers, unzip and re-stuff them periodically to help restore their shape
Protecting Against Sunlight & Fading
Direct sunlight is one of the most common — and overlooked — causes of premature fabric fading and deterioration. A little prevention goes a long way toward keeping your sofa's colour rich and vibrant.
- Position your sofa away from direct sunlight where possible
- Use curtains, blinds, or UV-filtering window film to reduce exposure
- Rotate your cushions seasonally to ensure even sun exposure across all surfaces
- Consider a fabric protector spray with UV protection for added defence
